![]() ![]() Le nouveau dictionnaire des termes d’histoire de l’art sera bien sûr indispensable à tout traducteur dans le domaine de l’histoire de l’art. Et de citer quelques contresens particulièrement savoureux (je me garderai bien de mentionner des exemples franco-anglais) : la Galerie des Glaces devenue la Galleria dei Gelati. Quel auteur n’a pas constaté, à son détriment, qu’un texte dans lequel il employait les mots les plus usuels de sa discipline avait été trahi par son traducteur. Le Dictionnaire des termes d’histoire de l’art ou, pour citer son titre anglais, le Dictionary of Art-History Terms (on aura compris qu’il est bilingue) s’adresse bien sûr en priorité aux traducteurs. Ils nous donnent le sentiment qu’il n’est jamais trop tard pour apprendre et espérer un jour tout savoir. Qui n’a pas aimé se perdre, se noyer, s’oublier, s’évader dans un dictionnaire, qui, à propos de la signification d’un mot, des dates de naissance et de mort d’un poète ou d’un peintre, n’a pas consacré plusieurs heures à lire tout ce qui concernait la civilisation sassanide ou l’histoire du charbon ? Les dictionnaires sont comme des petits trains : ils rajeunissent leur lecteur, le ramènent à son.
